If you’re stuffed after the third helping of Christmas wonder or feeling partied out after too much New Year’s fun, then why not escape to the coast to clear the head.
You won’t be alone. Boxing Day is the busiest walking day of the year with many brave souls choosing to take a brisk march or causal saunter along our magical coastline.
Getting out and about is a great way to feel refreshed and the kids will love it (despite the moaning beforehand… ).
Here are some walks recommended to us by the Coastal Spies which will take in the coastal air and help invigorate and inspire.
Aldeburgh – Suffolk
(recommended by Coastal Spi)
Aldeburgh is a fantastic place for a post celebration walk. Why not start out at the beach car park and take a look at the Maggi Hambling sculpture?
From there, you can wander along the front and around the fishing boats, Lifeboat Station and the many Aldeburgh shops and cafes (check out our Christmas opening times here >)
If you’re feeling like you want to get out of the town, then head to the Suffolk Coast Path which will take you to Snape Maltings, and beyond.
Durdle Door – Dorset
(Recommended by Victoria)
Go for a wonderful winter walk along the Dorest coast with the impressive Durdle Door arch. It can be viewed from the beach top, or if you are feeling energetic, from the beach after a climb down a few steep steps.
From here, you walk along the South West Coast Path and take in some truly breath taking scenery such as Swyre Head and Batis Head.
Visitors are well catered for in this area with many places to stop and take on some refreshments.
Holkham – Norfolk
(Recommended by MarkM)
Norfolk has some big beaches and the coast around Wells-next-to-the-Sea and Holkham are perfect for winter walks. You can take in the sea air and the fabulous countryside while the kids run along the miles of sand.
With a sprinkling of windmills and old halls along the way, the Peddars Way Norfolk Coast Path has some great short and long walks planned for you.

Hilbre Islands – Wirral
(Recommeded by Adelle)
If you are in the North West, then plan a trip to the Wirral Peninsula or the Hilbre Islands. Here you can escape to the coast and leave the bustle of life behind.
There are some terrific walks to be taken which will re-energise you.
The Hilbre Islands nature reserve is a hidden gem and a Site of Special Scientific Interest which will provide a sensational backdrop to a Christmas adventure.
Ravenscar – Yorkshire
(Recommended by Seaside Steve)
The Yorkshire coast is a magnificent place to runaway to and the coastal path between Ravenscar and Robin Hood’s Bay will offer some breathtaking scenery and a great place to contemplate some New Year’s resolutions.
Check the tide before heading off!

Saving...

We head off to Southwold every Boxing Day for a picnic on the beach. Its a great place to let the sea air clear away the cobwebs before heading back for mulled wine.
Nothing better!
Last year we met up with friends and walked from Reculver Country Park to near Margate along the coast. Great way to catch up with old friends and leave the messy house behind.
A great walk is from Corfe Castle to the coast taking in the Old Harry Rocks. Its a long way but worth it and the weather can be harsh so wrap up nice and warm. There is not a lot along the way so best bring some food. Also bring a camera as the rocks are quite spectacular and you can get some great photos when the sun is strong as they give off some great shadows.
